Trabaho Draft Take 2 + Feedback


After acting on the feedback we received from the first draft we decided a second draft was needed to improve. Feedback from the first draft gave us insight that a more concise narrative was needed to bette the film. After receiving this we thought that a voiceover could help remedy the situation, thus we recruited Louise Vippond, a professional voice actor, due to her background and client work from Commercial bank Qatar.

Postcard Progress


Background Layer: Before adding any text to the postcard, I opened up our website image. I chose this initially as I liked the bustling aesthetic and potential negative space.


After this I imported the standard "Trabaho' logo into the file. Following this I went back to the background layer and traced the top of the buildings using the quick selection tool. This was easy enough as it was against an entirely black background, and thus snapped to the buildings outline. I then used the "refine edge" application to shift this edge a few millimeters above the buildings, creating a mask that would include only the slightest amount of sky atop the roofs. I then duplicated this layer, with its, mask, creating a stack of layers in which the Trabaho layer was the middle. Then using the gradient tool in compliance with more masking, I faded the logos lower half, giving it a 'rising' aesthetic.


After the majority of the tweaks were done (mainly contrast and saturation as to appease what wanted the postcard to connote visually) I added the Tribeca Film Festival logo to the composition. This is a convention of postcards, denoting the official status, and giving insight into where the film would have been shown, and to what kind of audience.


Furthering these industry conventions, I added a few example nominations and awards to the lower left of the postcard. A postcard is supposed to create a median between art and advertisement, and a vital part of advertising is in displaying critical opinions of a product. This form of boasting is a way in which films can further connote who may like their film, and that someone likes their film in the first place.


These last two accolades were made to emphasise that these are examples and thus are simply variations of the other awards I made in Photoshop with masking and text layers.

Website Process



After a few group discussions regarding the platform on which our film's website will be constructed on, Kieran decided to utilize the cloud based web developer, Wix. This was a decision that was reached after considering the various aspects of what our website needed to be. These qualities mainly came down to design and accessibility, for both us and the audience. 




The websites considered for promotion of Trabaho- Wix, Squarespace, and Weebly



Of the considered programs, all were to a degree accessible and aesthetically pleasing, but ultimately, Wix proved to be the easiest to utilize and design. The compromise for this choice is that Wix only offers very specific addresses to free users, and that the bandwidth required to edit the website meant it was unable to be edited within school. Square space was a close second choice, but we felt the design wasn't quite as intuitive as Wix's. This paired with the higher cost and inability to access without some sum of money invested meant it was eventually out ruled.

I will further elaborate with overviews of the in progress website, explaining as to why I have made the design decisions I did.

Location Planning Continued

To utilize the time frame provided by a short documentary to the best of its potential, we as a group have researched and we should film for our product. These locations and interviews are encompass the essence of the filipino community in Qatar, being the most relevant to our subject matter, and beneficial to our end goal.


With our objectives in mind, we have chosen the following locations for the production of Trabaho 

  • Church of Our Lady of the Rosary- primary objective for us when it comes to getting an insight into the religious life of Filipinos, main Catholic church in Doha. This would require at least two weekends (two visits).

  • Qatar Sports Club- a good window into the leisure side of Filipino lives due to the high number of Filipinos who visit the club. Possible interviews with coaches/ heads of the club would be the primary objectives. A single visitwould be enough due to the limited amount of footage that can be obtained from a single club.   

  • Souq Waqif/ Corniche- two leisure hotspots for Filipinos in Doha. If enough footage is obtained, only one of these two locations will be features in Trabaho. A low chance of interviews with random individuals is possible, which would be great (as a contrast to pre-arranged interviews in our film). A single day would be enough to film at one of these locations.

  • Pre-Arranged Final Interview- we plan on conducting a 'finale' interview with a high-ranked individual that would most likely act as a conclusion to our film. The location will be arranged once we are aware of who this person is. A single day would be enough for this task. 


Although there are numerous variables that can alter the length of the filming process (eg. choosing between the Souq and Corniche or only one of them, or requiring more footage from one (or more) of the locations), Trabaho will approximately be shot over the course of five/ six days, which will be divided between five/ six weeks depending on how many locations can be visited in a single weekend.
